Background

Environmental monitoring is the fastest growing cleantech sector worldwide. As part of the National Centres of Expertise Programme for environmental technology, the Helsinki region is responsible for the research and commercialisation of environmental monitoring technology. This nation-wide spearhead programme is being coordinated by Green Net Finland and includes the cleantech cluster centres of expertise at Oulu, Lahti and Kuopio as well as other national centres of expertise at Kajaani and Mikkeli.

The project partners include important research establishments such as the University of Helsinki Department of Physics, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finnish Environment Centre, YTV, Geological Survey of Finland and VTT. Commercial partners include leading firms Vaisala Oyj, Elisa Oyj and Nokia Research Centre, with small-to-medium size enterprise (SME) participation through new product development projects.

Objectives

The objectives of the national centres of expertise programme in environmental monitoring in the 2007-2013 are:

  • to create 5 new development projects, with a volume of at least 5 MEUR
  • to develop 3 new partnerships with other international networks to facilitate the implementation of international projects.
  • to create 4 new environmental monitoring sector companies either during the programme or within the following 5 years
  • to create 40 new jobs in the environmental monitoring sector
  • to develop 5 new commercial partnerships at either a national or international level.

Working group

The purpose of the environmental monitoring working group is to direct programme development and act as a forum for cooperation. The working group members are:
